Why Bamboo Grove?

I agonized over what to call this blog for the course that i'm going to teach this semester. I started out with "SSCHS Asian Studies" but trying to search for it on Google meant that the blog had to compete for attention with the thousand-and-one sites relating to asian studies (all of them too academic for a teacher like me). All i wanted was a title that would be distinctly asian and yet not too academic-sounding. If there's one thing that i wanted to avoid its making the title sound too academic, limiting the scope of its potential audience.

Here's a list of some titles i considered:

Oriental Express
Orient Excess
Our Asia
SSCHS Asian Studies
Asia ini! (This is asia!)
Asiablog
Bamboo Grove
Asia: are you?

After a night's sleep, i knew that i wanted this blog to have a title that would immediately say "asian" to any reader. I narrowed it down to things that are asian and consequently found myself with the word "bamboo", something which almost immediately makes one think of asia.

I chose "Bamboo Grove" not only for its distinct asian flavor but also for it's significance in relation to asia as a community of nations. Each clump of bamboo having its own unique character but part of a larger bamboo grove. Each asian nation and civilization has its unique character but all inextricably linked in some way: history, culture, traditions, world-view.

Exploring the bamboo grove to understand how we are different but so related is the journey for us this semester.

Good work! I already placed a link to EnFourSi Kami! on Bamboo Grove.

Very good choice for your class blog name (hat tip to the class). For managing your blogs, you can go to betablogger for dummies; click on the link to Tacloban Speakeasy, there's a link to betablogger there.

There's lots of interesting, helpful, cool stuff on betablogger to help you.

sir, its gonna be a wide learning this semester.i hav come across about the latest in asia, that even though asia is divided into subcontinents with a lot of differences, it doesnt matter at all, as long as it belongs to asia, and that's what i like about the bamboogrove, it relates to us, asian scholaticans . . .

Finally! Got the time to surf the net… hehehe… can stay up all night doing this ‘cause our CI’s have masters tomorrow so… we don’t have to go on duty, yipee! Anyways, I’m new with this blog-thingy. It’s not that I’m not interested on this but I sometimes lack resources since I’m on DSL connection (as in Dial Sa Landline)… I only surf the net to do some research (whaaat!) and check my mails & friendster but now on I’ll really do my best to check this page every now and then…

By the way sir, cool name… very ASIAN...

sir, u got a nice pick of title for the blog. i also found the title, "asia ini!" cute, but the "bamboo grove" triggers anybody's curiosity and end up checking and reading the blog....

i think bamboo, is a good symbol for asians especially for us, filipinos.

just like a bamboo, filipinos tend to bend from any storms they encounter, and yet standing tall after all the hardships and struggles..

hehehe..gud day!
